Two Kippens badminton players had no problem showing they can compete with the best in the province.
Mike Alexander and Jake Foran were among the winners at the provincial Open badminton championships held recently in Foxtrap.
Alexander won double gold with the men’s singles and doubles crowns, while Foran claimed a gold medal when he teamed up with Alexander in Open doubles play.
Alexander beat Foran in a best-of-three men’s singles final — 21-16, 18-21, 21-16 — to claim gold.
Alexander upended Travis Rideout of Conception Bay South in a three-game battle — 21-15, 16-21, 21-12 — in a semifinal matchup to earn a shot at the men’s singles title.
Foran advanced to the final by virtue of a two-game sweep (21-13, 21-12) of St. John’s native Geoff Robinson.
The duo won the doubles crown with a victory over Rideout and Chad Peddle in a best-of-three final affair. The champs won the first game 21-19, lost the second one 21-12 and clinched the title with a 21-16 win in the third game.
They defeated Brad Walsh and Jonathon Pawson — 21-18, 18-21, 21-19 — in a close semifinal series to advance to the final.
