Gators outlast Monarchs in women’s softball duel

A quick start offensively allowed Whelan’s Gate to hang on for a 23-14 victory over the West Side Monarchs in Monday night play from the Corner Brook Molson Ladies Fastpitch Softball League at the Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field.

Coolenne Brake was a cool 6-for-6 at the dish, scoring four times on six singles. She had one RBI and a walk. Kathy Lukeman also scored four runs in the win in a 6-for-7 outing, swatting two RBIs as well. Janet Sheppard scored twice while going 2-for-4, with an RBI to her credit. Megan Decker had three RBIs in a 2-for-4 night where she was walked twice.

Melanie Penney was solid in the loss, going 5-for-5 with three RBIs and as many runs scored. Laura Prosper also had a strong game, getting three hits on four attempts, with four runs scored and an RBI. Sharon Bouffard was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Tonya Melendy was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Niki Warford earned the win on the mound, allowing 22 hits over seven innings, with four strikeouts and three walks.

Prosper and Penney shared pitching duties in the losing cause, with Prosper allowing eight hits and eight walks over three innings, with two strikeouts. Penney gave up 14 hits in her four innings of work, with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Gators jumped out to a 9-1 lead after two innings, but the game was much tighter after that, with the two teams trading high-scoring innings back and forth.
