Leading 17-8 after six-and-a-half innings of play Monday night, the Rapid Power Sports Bees appeared to be buzzing along to a comfortable win.
Then they nearly hit the proverbial windsheild.
The Gators stormed back with eight runs over the final two innings in a comeback bid that fell just short, as the Bees held on for the 17-16 Corner Brook Molson Ladies Fastpitch Softball League victory at Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field.
Bees’ Gillian Hedderson scored three times and added an RBI in a 3-for-5 evening at the plate, while teammates Tammy Kendell and Claudette Sheppard were both 2-for-5. Kendell scored three runs and swatted an RBI, while Sheppard had three RBIs and two runs scored.
Michelle O’Reilly was strong in defeat, amassing four RBIs and four runs scored with a 5-for-6 stat line. Kathy Lukeman was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Coolene Brake had four RBIs and two runs scored in a 3-for-6 effort.
Kendell was the winning pitcher, allowing 12 hits and three walks over seven innings, with 11 strikeouts.
Nikki Rose pitched one ill-fated inning where she walked seven batters and gave up a hit, while Brake did the rest of the mound work, striking out five batters, while allowing 11 hits and nine walks in six innings.
