CORNER BROOK  Katarina Roxon showed she can hold her own against some of the best in the world once again.

The Kippens finished in fifth place in both her events as a member of Team Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Her performance is pretty impressive considering this year all the Swimmers with a Disability (SWAD) category swims were classed SB9, although SB8 category swimmers were eligible. This meant all swimmers comleted as SB9 regardless of their classicification.

She opened the Games with a fifth-place finish in the 100-m breaststroke against the higher category of SB9 swimmers with a final clocking of 1:23.95.

This performance allowed her to beat her previous best time by 1.07 seconds and improving a whopping 4.02 seconds since the Can-Am International Championships in March.

Her second swim came in the 200-m Individual Medley, posting a final time of 2:45.19 to nab fifth spot.

This event also showed how much work she had put into her training as she beat her previous best time by 3.4 seconds and improving an impressive 7.92 seconds since March.

“That was nothing short of sheer discipline, determination, great training and a burning desire to improve and turn things around,” Leonard Roxon, her coach and dad, said in an email.

The para-swimming sensation is on her way to Vancouver to catch the tail end of a training camp so she couldn’t be reached for comment on her latest venture.

Roxon and the entire Para Swimming national team will travel to Los Angeles from Vancouver for a pre-competition training camp in preparation for her next international event — the Pan-Pacific Para Swimming Championships — being staged Aug. 6-10 at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.
