DEER LAKE  Lee Churchill didn’t decide until late summer he wanted to give the Deer Lake 67 another shot, but he was all business Sunday as he set a course record for western Newfoundland’s only ultra marathon.

Churchill, who lives in Corner Brook, won top honours in the second annual Deer Lake 67 with a final clocking of five hours, 14 minutes and 41 seconds in a field of 32 runners up to the challenge of finishing the 67-kilometre journey.

The Deer Lake 67 is a venture around Deer Lake with roughly 569 metres of vertical climb. Terrain included dirt roads, deserted rail bed, several stretches of pavement and water crossings.

The field of racers, with a mix of Newfoundlanders and an entry from Yukon on board, tested their mettle on a wet and slick course as light rain persisted throughout. This would prove to be right up Churchill’s alley it appears.

“If it had been hot and sunny I think it would have been a bit harder to get to the finish, but 67kms in 5:14.41 I’m pretty happy with the outcome,” he said.

Churchill was back on the start line after finishing in second spot behind Peter Bazeley at the inaugural event held one year ago.

He believes the organizers really put off a great event so it helped him form his decision to come back again this year with hopes of winning the title.

“It’s such a well organized local event it’s hard to sit on the side and watch it, so I decided to jump in again this year,”  he said.

Bazeley wasn’t around to defend his title because he and his wife Kate are busy training for the Toronto Marathon in October.

Like any race he’s done, short or long distance, Churchill went into the race knowing he had to be at his best both physically and mentally to get through the race.

That’s easier said than done most would say.

“It’s more of a mental challenge more than a physical challenge so you just got to kind of keep your head in the game,” he said.

According to unofficial results supplied Sunday, Nancy Jewer won the women's crown after ending up in seventh place overall.
