CORNER BROOK Team Western gave it all they had, but it wasn’t enough to slay the giants of the provincial under-14 male soccer league.
The western squad lost both games at home to the undefeated, league-leading Mount Pearl side in a two-game set on the artificial turf at Wellington Street Sports Complex over the Canada Day weekend.
Mount Pearl improved to 9-0 with a 5-3 victory over Team Western on Canada Day with Paul Hilley leading the charge with a three-goal performance.
Michael O’Brien and Riley Bennett also dented the twine for the top team in the seven-team provincial setup.
Nathan Barker, Evan Rouzes and Tyler Wise supplied the goals for Team Western, who slipped to fifth place with a 3-4-1 record so far.
On Saturday, Hilley scored two goals to lead Mount Pearl to a 3-2 triumph over Team Western, who had Brandon Anstey between the pipes for both games of the weekend set.
Michael O’Brien scored the winning goal for Mount Pearl at 55 minutes.
Chris Dobbin (36 minutes) and Nathan Barker (52 minutes) registered the markers for the home team.
Team Western resumes action July 13-15 with a three-game showdown at Wellington against the Burin Peninsula Soccer Association representative.
