CORNER BROOK Two wins on home turf is always a nice way to kick off the season.
The Kent Western Under-16 male soccer team won both games against Avalon in their first taste of provincial under-16 male soccer league action this season at Wellington Street Sports Complex over the Canada Day weekend.
The western representative completed the weekend sweep with a 1-0 victory over the Avalon boys Sunday morning at Wellington Street Sports Complex with Ryan Dawe providing the game’s only goal — at 74 minutes — and keeper Zachary Taylor recording the clean sheet.
Dawe notched four goals and Matthew Collins added a single tally to the scoresheet as the western side downed Avalon 5-2 in their season opener Saturday at Wellington.
Isaac Bonisteele scored both goals for Avalon.
Zachary Taylor was the winning keeper, while the loss was pinned on James Cadigan.
Western moves into third place with the weekend sweep, while Avalon stays in the cellar in the six-team setup with an 0-7-1 record.
The local squad resumes action this weekend with a road trip east for a showdown with Mount Pearl on Saturday and a rematch with Avalon Sunday morning.
