Black downs Gold in men’s indoor soccer playoff game

CORNER BROOK  The two Monarchs teams in the local men’s indoor soccer league needed penalty kicks to decide a winner in the first game of the playoff round Sunday night at the Pepsi Studio.

Monarchs Black eked out a 6-5 victory over Monarchs Gold in a shootout at the Pepsi Studio in a Group A playoff game.

Clarence Bennett, Mark Fitzpatrick and Cory Mosher scored on penalty kicks for the Black side.

Pat Fewer missed on his attempt as the first shooter for the Gold side, but Wayne Allen and Chris Casey managed to bulge the twine in the shootout.

Mosher had two goals for the winners in regulation time, while Bennett had one. Fitzpatrick and Lucas Giroux also had single markers in regulation time for the winners.

Fewer scored twice for the Gold side in regulation time, while single tallies were added to the scoresheet by Tyler Lavers, Rich Wells and Chris Casey.

Meanwhile, in Group B playoff action, Ryan Dawe, Evan Martin and Andrew Butt had two goals apiece to lead the Corner Brook Under-18s to a 6-4 triumph over the Masters.

Todd Mercer and Vince Pickett had two goals each for the Masters.

Playoff action resumes April 16 with Stephenville clashing with the Under-18s in a Group B matchup slated for 7:30 p.m. and the Curling Rangers matching wits with Monarchs Gold in a Group A showdown 8:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Studio.
