CORNER BROOK - Once the last shouts of victory die down from the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the Wellington Street Complex becomes a construction site again.
Mayor Charles Pender says the contractor, Brook Enterprises, has not finished work at the site and is about three or four weeks from turning the site over to the city permanently.
He said in the meantime the beach volleyball and tennis courts will be closed to the public. He said soccer may be played on the field, but a schedule will have to be worked out with the Corner Brook Soccer Association.
"As of Sunday, or late Saturday night, that will become a construction site again," Mayor Pender said.
"It's not going to be open to the general public as it has been for the week of Games.
"We want people to understand that because what we don't want is people to go in on a construction site where there may be equipment or materials and it may be dangerous. We don't want people to assume because it was open for the Games, we can go in there now."
He said the tennis courts will be off limits. Mayor Pender said there are fences that have to be put in and sods have to be laid.
"Although it was open for the Games and we've gotten rave reviews so far, we want to make it clear that it's still a construction site until it's turned over to the city," he said. "... People should know that once the Games are over these facilities need to be finished. This is a massive project and there's still a fair amount of work to be done."
