Shortly after getting the word from media sources that firefighters rejected the tentative deal, the City of Corner Brook came out swinging.
At a hastily called press conference at 11:20 p.m. at city hall, Mayor Neville Greeley, flanked by the deputy mayor, four councillors and senior staff, said he expects the negotiating team of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1222 to resign.
He said they clearly do not have the support of the union, after 93 per cent of the members voted Monday to reject the offering. Greeley said that vote is a vote of non-confidence.
The mayor repeatedly said he was shocked because council and senior staff felt a deal was at hand based on the word of the negotiation team from the union.
