CORNER BROOK The options for people looking for somewhere to eat are increasing in Corner Brook these days. Two new restaurants have opened on Broadway and two more are getting set to open on Union Street.
Brian and Irene Barrett had a business concept in mind for quite some time. But with him commuting to Alberta to work and her holding down the fort at home it was put on the backburner, until just recently. Brian, a chef of more than 22 years, and Irene, a psychologist, are the owners of Tuck In. The restaurant, located in the Broadway Mini Mall during the first week of August.
Tuck In is a breakfast and lunch restaurant which also offers a Friday dinner club by reservation only. While Brian is the master of the kitchen, Irene is the concept person. She takes care of marketing, food ideas, quality control and management.
“We’re very much about being community oriented,” said Irene.
She said they accept any and all input from their customers. And they also believe in treating their staff well and have a human resources policy to aid in that.
Fit in with other businesses
Over on Union Street, Kelly-Anne Pelley and her husband Jamie are hoping to have their latest business venture opened by mid-September.
The Pelleys bought the building, which currently houses two of their other enterprises, a Subway and Jumbo Video, and a privately run Chinese restaurant, last summer. It is the former location of Gary’s and Union Station dance bars.
“We knew we didn’t want a nightclub to go back in,” said Pelley. “That was not what we were interested in.”
So, she said, the two started to explore business opportunities. One in particular was Menchie’s, a frozen yogurt shop with a location in St. John’s that their son raves about. Pelley said they did some online research and took a trip to visit the store.
“And we thought it fit really, really well with our current businesses that we have here.” Pelley also thought it offered something that was missing in the city.
Menchie’s started in California in 2007 and now has 350 locations worldwide and a Canadian head office in Toronto. It offers customers 12 varieties of frozen yogurt, including a non-dairy sorbet, fat free and no sugar added options, that comes in 100 flavours.
“It’s all self-serve concept, which is kind of neat,” said Pelley. “You get it all yourself and it’s a weigh and pay.”
Once the Menchie’s location opens the Pelleys will turn their focus to making changes and the Subway location in the building.
She said the plan is to expand the restaurant and turn it into a Subway Cafe. The cafe concept offers a more relaxed environment with a full coffee bar and baked goods.
Filling a need
Alongside Menchie’s, Wayne Hicks and Andrew Fleming are partnering in the restaurant business for the first time with Wingin’ It. It is a proud time for them as they believe they are adding an eatery and pub that fills a big need in the city.
“I have always wanted to do something like this in Corner Brook,” Fleming, a businessman who now lives in St. John’s said. “I love Corner Brook and always wanted to be able to do something like this for the city. “The city is in desperate need of something new, and this fits right in with that.”
The St. John’s-based chicken wing franchise continues its expansion across the province with its next opening to come this fall. It will bring its 93 flavours of wings and ribs, and brand new drink menu.
It is expected to have a capacity to seat about 90 people inside the new restaurant, but will also have an outside deck constructed on the roof of the facility, offering a panoramic view of Corner Brook.
Hicks is excited about their plans to become a community-oriented operation, including being active in the sporting community and other events such as Winter Carnival.
In addition to Tuck In on Broadway that downtown street also recently saw the opening of Mudder’s Kitchen. The small takeout where you can get your fix of a burger and fries is located at the intersection with Caribou Road.
