Albert Chislett, the co-discoverer of the Voisey’s Bay nickel-copper-cobalt deposits, has died at age 69.
According to his obituary, Chislett died Sunday after a battle with cancer.
Chislett and business partner Chris Verbiski made the discovery in 1993.
Three years later, mining company Inco did a deal for the property. Vale would acquire Inco in 2006.
Born the same year Newfoundland and Labrador joined Confederation, Chislett was a lover of outdoors and had originally pursued accounting and construction careers before entering the field of prospecting.
Chislett’s obituary noted he was a “strong, self-reliant man and fearless fighter” who believed passionately in the resource potential of the province.
He is survived by his partner of 30 years, Sherry Doyle, as well as three children among other family members.
