ST. ANTHONY, NL – A decision on Great Northern Port Inc.’s proposal to develop a full service marine offshore base at Crémaillère Harbour has yet to be made.
The undertaking was registered for an environment assessment on Nov. 14, and Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Eddie Joyce’s decision was originally due on Dec. 29.
The due date for the decision was then extended to Jan 15.
But, as of Jan. 17, no update has been given.
The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment has informed the Northern Pen that the registration is still under review.
The project would see the creation of an industrial subdivision and deep water marine port that includes the construction of roads, warehousing, fabrication and laydown areas, a diesel and base oil fuel tank farm, a liquid mud plant, docks, ramps and onshore quays, and a graving dock for refit and repair of large vessels.
Construction would occur in three phases, the first beginning in 2020 with expected completion by 2030.
According to a bulletin from the department, the proponent says it is looking to meet onshore and offshore logistics requirements as well as military and coast guard needs.
Crémaillère Harbour is located approximately 4.1 kilometres south of St. Anthony.
