WHITBOURNE, NL – Metro Environmental Limited has to complete an environmental impact statement (EIS) for its planned industrial composting facility project on the Argentia access road.

The requirement was included as part of an environmental assessment bulletin released by the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment on Thursday, May 17.

The bulletin indicated additional information must be provided in the EIS to demonstrate the economic viability of the project and to describe a public information program to address any concerns from the public.

The environmental assessment committee (EAC) appointed for the project will provide scientific and technical advice to Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Andrew Parsons, as well as prepare draft guidelines to assist Metro Environmental in the development of the EIS.

The public will be invited to review and comment on the draft guidelines.

Metro Environmental is proposing to compost a variety of organic waste from commercial and industrial sources in the province and turn it into a marketable fertilizer.

The facility would be located approximately 3.5 kilometres southwest of the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Route 100.
