CLARKE’S BEACH, NL – The Newfoundland Distillery Company’s seaweed gin won a double gold medal at last month’s San Francisco World Spirit Competition.

The Clarke’s Beach-based company’s cloudberry gin also earned a silver medal at the event.

There were over nearly 2,500 entries for this year’s competition, the most in its 18-year history.

To win a double gold at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition, each member of the judging panel must independently award a spirit a gold medal. Last year, only two Canadian spirits received the honour.

The silver medal for the cloudberry gin recognizes that spirit as “outstanding in its category.”

The Newfoundland Distillery Company, which was founded by William Carter and Peter Wilkins, makes its seaweed gin using dulse (seaweed) harvested from the Grand Banks with local juniper and a hint of savoury.

The cloudberry gin has local juniper, cloudberries (bakeapples) and a dash of savoury.
