ST. JOHN’S, NL – Out-of-province visitors are coming to Newfoundland and Labrador and opening their purses and wallets at record levels.
Last year, 553,000 people visited the province, spending roughly $575 million, Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation Minister Christopher Mitchelmore said in the House of Assembly today, May 28.
Those figures represent the highest level of non-resident visitation and tourism spending in the province’s history, he noted.
“Newfoundland and Labrador is known for its scenic coastlines, culture and welcoming hospitality,” the minister said.
“Our travellers are seeking authentic travel experiences and the Provincial Tourism Product Development Plan, released in 2017, is setting the direction for new and enhanced tourism offerings to attract more visitors - to encourage them to stay longer and increase spending.”
This week is Tourism Awareness Week.
According to Mitchelmore, tourism now supports over 2,600 businesses and almost 20,000 jobs in the province.
