CORNER BROOK Trent Quinton realizes the idea of pet cremation can be a bit of a touchy subject.
After all, there are few things more painful for a child, in particular, than saying good-bye to a four-legged furry friend.
However, the reality is the bodies of these deceased animals must go somewhere and a cremation is an environmentally friendly, efficient option when the time comes to part ways with the physical remains.
Quinton recently applied for and received the go-ahead to construct a pet crematorium on Curling Street.
Its done in St. Johns and Grand Falls right now, so anyone that wanted to get their animal cremated had to bring it to Grand Falls, he told The Western Star. Im the manager of the Wild Cove landfill and from time to time I get phone calls from people basically asking me if I could bury an animal or what options they had, so this is kind of where I heard about it.
Theres no real experience to it, he added. Its a bit of training with the machine itself, but theres not really much to it. Ive spoken to local vets and theyre all on board with it. Its a service, even for animals, the vets might have that need to be incinerated.
Once people bring their animals to Quinton, who hopes to have the operation up and running by October, they have a choice of whether theyd like to receive the ashes and what style of urn or memory box theyd like.
It seems to be getting more and more popular, said Quinton. People want ashes to remember their animal or a lot of times youre dealing with winter months and you dont know what to do with the animal. You dont want to keep it in the deep freeze until spring, so its a good option for people there as well.
The incinerator will be trucked in from Orlando, Fla. which leaves Quinton with a few months to get prepared.
Its a fair amount of work, he said. Ive got to build a building for it, Ive got to get it here its a long way to truck a big machine but once it gets here all the planning has already been done beforehand and it will only take a day or two to hook it up.
The machine is totally environmentally friendly. Its odourless and smokeless and has dual burners and UV sensors to detect and burn any gases.
This may be only the beginning of Quintons foray into the animal afterlife business.
Im looking into building a pet cemetery sort of thing maybe, he said. Ive got plans to expand later on down the road and get into that market.
