Cox’s Cove looking to expand its boundaries
CLIFF WELLS The Western Star
COX’S COVE — The Town of Cox’s Cove is one step closer to expanding its boundaries.
Mayor Tony Oxford, of Cox’s Cove, said the move is meant to deal with development that’s tantalizingly close to the town’s southern border.
Oxford said the trapezoidal area is about a kilometre long, has a short side a half-kilometre long and is about a kilometre deep.
“We’ve got some development on the southern border,” Oxford said.” We thought it was within the boundary but closer examination determined it wasn’t.
“We made an application to extend the boundary to take in this area.”
He said the council has been working on taking in the area of level land behind the town for the better part of a year. He said it used to be a grazing area but now there’s a mink farm on the land.
A meeting was held Friday evening to get input into the idea of annexing the land to the town. The results of the meeting were not known as off press time.
“The most likely use (of the land) would be agricultural. There are more potential issues with agricultural properties — the smell and spreading manure and these sorts of things. It’s probably wise for the municipality to have some avenue of direct control.”
He said there’s a woods road that would become a municipal street. There would be snowclearing, road resurfacing and regular garbage collection done if the town takes over responsibility for the area.
“You would reasonably expect it would be a benefit,” he said. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t happen. I can’t find any disadvantage for anybody.
“Anything you do in Newfoundland, the bureaucratic wrangling it’s terrible in this province.”
