Paul Hoven is upset Western Health made an appointment to vaccinate his five-year-old daughter Danielle, but cancelled the appointment a few days later.

He got a call Thursday making the date for the swine flu shot and Saturday it was called off. He says he wasn’t given a reason, but he thinks it’s because she’s about seven months too old.

A few of his friends with children around the same age have run into the same thing.

“We got the phone call saying she’s going to be vaccinated, then they turn around and take it away from you,” Hoven said. “I don’t know why they did it.
“My wife and I figure because she’s school age, she is in school and she’s not high risk, that (she is) going to be done in school at the same time as the other kids.”

He knows things are changing all the time and his daughter will eventually get the swine flu shot, but the shifting risk groups and clinic dates makes it seem to him as though the health authority doesn’t know what its doing.

“Every time they turn around it’s changed like changing their underwear,” he said.

Dr. Greg Mercer, regional medical officer of health, knows the changes for H1N1 vaccination clinics are causing confusion.

“There was a lot of confusion because the narrowed target groups came out after supper Friday and we had already done a lot of our media interviews,” Mercer said.
“People aren’t happy,” he said. “I spent the better part of the day (Sunday) at the clinic in Stephenville and there were certainly people who were quite unhappy. We had people 45-years-of age with diabetes saying, ‘I need to get done.’
“We were saying: ‘We know you need to get done and we appreciate it, but at this time we’re only able to give the vaccine to who the minister indicates we give it to.’”

Drop in appointments for people in the high-risk groups are available today at the public health clinic at 347 O’Connell Drive in Corner Brook starting at 9 a.m.

There are also drop in appointments available at 149 Montana Dr. in Stephenville starting at 9 a.m.

In Deer Lake at the Xavier School Complex a clinic is slated for noon- 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The Pollards Point Public Health Clinic begins giving shots Wednesday at 9 a.m., as well clinics are to be held at the municipal building in Norris Point, the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in Port Saunders and the Calder Health Centre in Burgeo.

A Wednesday clinic is also set for St. James Elementary in Port aux Basques at noon.

In addition to the above, H1N1 immunization clinics for all residents of the following communities will take place on the south coast: St. Simon St. Jude School at Francois at 9:30 a.m. and the Western Health clinics in Grey River at 12:30 p.m. and Grand Bruit at 2:30 p.m.

Ramea held its clinic Monday.

Up to Sunday evening Western Health had given about 4,800 doses of vaccine.
Move vaccine is due Thursday.

On Wednesday, Western Health will begin taking appointments for pregnant women to receive the unadjuvanted vaccine.

High-risk groups

Children 6-59 months (under 5 years)
Age 5-24 years with chronic health conditions
Women 20-40 weeks pregnant
Two primary caregivers children under six months
Two primary caregivers of immuno-compromised children up to 24 years of age who cannotbe vaccinated themselves

a_frog_croaking from NL writes: I was at the clinic on O'Connell Rd yesterday where I was told my 14 month old with possible egg allergy could not be immunised. He has asthma and a neurofibromatosis. I asked if I and my husband could receive the vaccine in order to protect him and I was told no. They say they are only immunizing the parents of babies under 6 months, regardless of immunocompromise in older children. They don't know what they're doing.

cbrooker from nl writes: there must have been a good reason why he never recieved the immunization....fever , flu like symptoms, wbc down....etc...just practice good handwashing.....people have to realize there is a criteria set forth

cbrooker_in_ns from ns writes: She said why he never received the vaccine. I don't think it terribly unreasonable that, if you can't for whatever reason have your child vaccinated and they are high-risk, that the immediate caregivers should be vaccinated. I'm 29 weeks pregnant and received the vaccination last night and my daughter will, fingers-crossed, get hers on Saturday. However, my son just passed the age limit (59 months), so hopefully, we will be better able to protect him from it in the home.

Blunt from NL writes: I don't think anyone in our system knows what's going on. My 16 month old son has a an appointment booked for tomorrow. He'll get his first half dose then, but I know there were people called over the weekend to bring their kids in then. I also know that a number of kids over the age of 5 were vaccinated on these same days, family members of ours included. And how did they get vaccinated, by lying and saying that their kids had asthma. Now, I'm not condoning anyone for wanting to have their child vaccinated, but where does crossing the line come in to play here and who determines who's the higher risk??? I would deny myself the vaccine to have my child or any other for that matter receive it first. Seems that there is no plan of action in place by our health boards or our government, and people will take advantage of this by using underhanded tactics for their sake first.

from away from ontario writes: The criteria of getting the Vaccine will keep on changing as stocks supplies start to dwindle. In the first week when the vaccine were being distributed it was any family that had a child under 5 were to be vaccinated. As the vaccine stocks lower in clinics they are forced to change it to only the child under 5 are to receive the vaccine. The same steps are being taken with other people with chronic health problems unfortunately, One person with diabetes will get the shot but the next day because the lower stock supplies someone with the same health problem with be turned away. The problem is the supplied and demand. Manufactures need to keep up with the demand.

ruby Pynn from corner brook, NL. writes: I had an appt.with my doctor yesterday that he scheduled weeks ago to get the regular flu shot. When i went there he gave me a letter stating i was a High Risk patient because of my chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and to go to the Pepsi Center right away to get the H1N1 shot. Upon my arrival there, i was told they are only vaccinating people under the age of 24. I feel the Doctors are NOT informed enough as to where and when to send patients to get their shots. As it stands right now i still have no idea where to even go..It`s Rediculous ! Why can`t your family Doctor give you one of these needles ?? !!
