Charges withdrawn in contraband cigarette case
CORNER BROOK The Western Star
Both federal and provincial crowns withdrew charges against an Ontario man in court Tuesday.
Jeffrey Scott Pinack, 34, of Wasaga Beach was one of three people arrested after being pulled over by police on the highway near Corner Brook May 23.
He was charged with two counts of illegal tobacco possession — one under the federal Excise Act and another under the Newfoundland and Labrador Tobacco Act — when his truck and trailer were stopped. A charge under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act was withdrawn in July.
The RCMP seized 216 cartons of contraband cigarettes while searching the vehicle.
Federal Crown Andrew May and provincial Crown Darrell Coombs had those charges withdrawn Tuesday.
Pinack was not present.
