Swine flu hits Deer Lake, sick Red Wings must play print this article
DEER LAKE
KATHERINE HUDSON
The Western Star

There was a line-up of about 20 people at Xavier Junior High School before doors opened at noon Wednesday, ready for the start of the administration of the H1N1 vaccine.

Kim Ball was first in line. She said she drove by at around 8:30 a.m., prepared to get in line if one had already formed. She didn’t end up getting in line until a little after 11 a.m., she said.

“The problem is having to wait outside no matter how long you have to wait, whether it be 10 minutes or three hours. It doesn’t matter,” said Ball.

The day was cool with sporadic showers throughout the day and evening, causing discomfort to those waiting for the doors to open.

“These are people with chronic illnesses. It’s ridiculous. The waiting area should be indoors. Maybe even use the stadium as a better position to put this setup. People would at least be indoors and not having to freeze their butts off,” she said.

By 4 p.m., the clinic had seen about 70 people and were expecting more of a rush after the end of the workday.

Red Wings afflicted
Even though the vaccine has made its way to Deer Lake, coughs, colds and all manner of flu symptoms have crept into the community, and onto the ice. It was announced Wednesday that the Deer Lake Red Wings will not be playing at home or in Grand Falls-Windsor this weekend due to much of the team having flu-like symptoms.

“As it stands right now, the Deer Lake Red Wings cannot ice a hockey team this weekend due to the outbreak of the H1N1 virus,” Red Wings general manager Andy Brake said Wednesday afternoon. “We had a few guys that were sick around everyone last weekend and from there it looks like approximately 80 to 90 per cent of the hockey team now have contracted the virus,”

“Most of our players are in bed today. We’d have to take a weekend off to get this thing resolved, shut this thing down. It’ll just continue to feed if we continue to play,” he said.

Brake said the team does not have enough bodies to play hockey this weekend, however, Brake discovered late Wednesday night that the West Coast Senior Hockey League brass is forcing his team to play.

SL from NL writes: Play sick and bring it to the public ! Obviously the Big Brass haven't been affected by the virus yet but have suffered a major bump on the head. Forfeit the games Andy and keep your team and the fan safe.

colleen from nl writes: Fortfiet the game.... I for one will not be attending a hockey game where every second person on and off the ice can be inffected with this virus..Everyone needs to take this thing seriously, we are only seeing and hear about some of the people that are getting sick... Members of my family have had the virus and believe me they all said they would not wish this on anyone...It's not only the players but the general public, believe it or not some people just don't have the good sense to stay home when ill and that puts all the fans at risk...So please use common sense Andy, fortiet the game and make the right choice for everyone.

Lawrence Best from NL writes: As long as Darren Langdon is on the team your not going very far anyway. He loves to spend his time in the penalty box anyway. KEEP THE TEAM OUT OF OUR ARENAS.

SL from NL writes: Lawrence Best, You are at best an idiot. Are you not smart enough to care about the health and well being of the team and the fans. What a stupid comment. How does this article lead to another jab at Darren. And secondly, he has children and family all around him. Can you not put aside your childish behavior enough to think of the situation and not the person you think you know so much about?
You should keep out of the arena, Idiots like you are what give fans like me a bad name.
And if you or someone close to you happen to get sick I hope you have the sense to stay inside with your mouth SHUT.

TLC from NL writes: This is totally crazy..Members of my family have been victims of the H1N1 and it is no joke. For the Big Brass to be forcing DL to ice a team is not a wise decision...the arena will be like a breeding ground..Dont the other teams who are playing DL realize that they will now be exposed to the same virus. And when their team does not have enough players to put on the ice..would they not expect the common courtesy of being able to have their tend mend.

And before everyone jumps on my comments...NO I am not a Red Wings fan..just a concerned hockey fan who thinks that this is a very very bad decision on the Leagues part. Every where in Nl there are things being cancelled due to the H1N1 and the Big Brass decide to FORCE a team to play...Great Sportmanship I must say!

I for one will not be attendin any games where I know that there is a potential of being exposed to the H1N1 virus..

JMO!!

Affiliation from NL writes: I thought the Sr. Red Wings were affiliated with the Jr. Red Wings for just this purpose. If players get injured/sick, they can fill out their roster from the junior club. You don't see the NHL shutting down because players get this illness, they call up players from the AHL. No, I'm not an idiot, I know this isn't the NHL. I'm just saying that affiliations with junior teams are for instances like this.

Tommy from gull island, nl writes: Lawrence, I for one am sick. If I had a choice of who I wanted to pay my medical bills - you or Darren Langdon, it'd be a no brainer. If you made half of the money that this man has made as a professional hockey player you wouldn't be as jealous. Childish man.

Almost as childish as the name Lawrence.

DLfan from NL writes: How is it possible that hockey takes priority over health? With the H1N1 crisis we are facing nothing should be more important than focusing our health, not even hockey should take priority. This is outrageous. If I were Mr. Brake, I would forfit the games and give up the points...the health of the players and the public is far more important than a few points....the Red Wings will get 'em back anyways! :P

Topcat from Bay of Islands, Newfoundland writes: So the league says if Deer Lake can't ice a team this coming week-end they will forfeit the games.

Interesting.

The team has already stated it is pretty well impossible to meet their committment this week-end because of the number of players with H1N1. Not much the team can do but forfeit the games. The factors which will lead to this decision are outside of the teams hands.

No games - No money from the two week-end games. The gate from these games is lost forever and there is no easy way to recoup the lost revenues. Revenues from the gate are vital to the survival of each league team, and the league as well. Eliminating the revenue from just one home game of any team certainly won't help the financial stability of the affected teams, or the league. In the end, two teams will suffer, the league will suffer, solely because of an arbitrary decision made by the so called ''Big Brass'' of the league.

A much more satisfactory decision might have been to postpone the games to another available time. There shouldn't be much trouble finding a few hours of available and suitable ice time at those two arenas if the league cared to look. Both teams would have benefitted financially from the games being actually played, and the fans would not have lost the pleasure of watching two highly entertaining West Coast Senior Hockey games.

Local fans are not interested in hearing unharmonious sounds from the ''Big Brass'', all they want is to hear the toot of a horn after their favorite team scores.

Senior hockey fan from Corner Brook, NL writes: Very good points TopCat. These games do generate a fair bit of money for the teams as well as the communities where they are played. It's too bad the league executive can't see that.
