Larry Hickey will be spending at least another week in jail before a date can be set for a bail hearing.

Hickey, 39, is the John’s Beach man who turned himself in to the RCMP Thursday morning after the police had issued a release Wednesday evening, stating they were looking for Hickey in relation to an alleged incident involving a firearm earlier that day.

The release described Hickey as possibly being armed and dangerous.

According to the RCMP, Hickey’s ex-wife and another man showed up at Hickey’s home to get some of her property, and an argument ensued. During the argument, Hickey allegedly fired a gunshot over the man’s head inside the residence.

Hickey turned himself into the RCMP in Corner Brook at about 8 a.m. Thursday morning, and he made his first appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook Thursday afternoon. According to information filed with the court, Hickey is accused of pointing a .303-calibre rifle at the man and threatening to kill him.

Crown attorney Adam Sparkes told Judge Wayne Gorman the Crown would be opposed to Hickey’s release.

Gary Kearney, who represented Hickey in court Thursday, said he was not ready to set a date for a bail hearing because he was of the understanding there was further disclosure to be provided to the defence from the Crown. Kearney said he would want to review that information with Hickey before setting the bail hearing date.

Hickey was remanded into police custody until his next court appearance, which has been set for next Friday.

The formal charges against Hickey include uttering threats, pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm. The RCMP investigation is continuing and police said additional charges have not been ruled out.
