Kippens woman upset with having security called on her at hospital print this article

Bonnie Dinn, a resident of Kippens, is upset by the treatment she says she received at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville — treatment which ended with a visit from hospital security.

“It’s bad enough to be locked up in your own room for a full week, but then to have security called on you in the hospital is crazy,” she said.

Dinn said she had been to Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in emergency on Sunday where she saw Dr. Greg Mercer of Corner Brook, who was filling in for another doctor.
She said Dr. Mercer had told her to return on Monday and register out front to get her vital signs checked by a nurse, since she had now been diagnosed with pneumonia.

While waiting, with her mask on as instructed, she started coughing and said she got “the look” from the receptionist.

Dinn said she tried to explain to her that Dr. Mercer had told her to be there, but the first thing the receptionist said is she shouldn’t be there but on the other side where the flu assessment centre is.

“I was so embarrassed, especially when I heard her calling for security, that I went out in the porch, then I returned to get the name of the receptionist and she wouldn’t give it to me,” she said.

Dinn said she asked a security guard the receptionist’s name and he said he didn’t know and even when she went back to the porch the receptionist came out there. It was then the security guard said he was handling the situation.

“Despite that, the receptionist continued shouting at me, saying she wasn’t trying to pick a fight and I wasn’t supposed to be there in that area,” she said.

Karen Alexander, Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital site director, said an investigation is being carried out into Dinn’s complaints.

Dinn had left the hospital after the incident. She said that later Alexander told her it was important to return to the hospital and go to the flu clinic, which she did on Monday afternoon. She said when she went to the flu assessment clinic, they took her to emergency, and there told her to throw her mask in the garbage because she was no longer contagious.

“I ended up back in emergency where I needed to be in the first place,” she said.

Kippens Girl from NL writes: That Security Guard was only doing his job. They are trying to keep that part of the hospital for healthy patients & I totally understand.
They may have overreacted a bit but how else are they going to keep this H1N1 under control?
I know of healthy patients who caught the H1N1 flu because people who had it went to the Emergency Entrance instead of the Flu Assessment Entrance.
I think the Security Guards are doing a great job. This is spreading quickly & people who have or had the H1N1 should stay out of the Emergency portion of the hospital.

Jack from Gillams, Newfoundland and Labrador writes: Even though H1N1 is clearly a sensitive issue in the health care sector, in light of Bonnie Dinn's traumatic experiences and a receptionist's over-reactive and judgemental behaviour, Western Health should require all employees to undergo interpersonal and communication skills training.

In the meantime, the receptionist and security officer in question should both be suspended without pay for over-reacting, and not allowing a patient to obey their orders.

Earth to the Receptionists, calling security or the police because someone is coughing is not only over-reacting, but is also a form of foolishnes, meaning he/she should be ashamed of themselves.

Who knows, that person was probably coughing due to a cold, asthma, or other breathing disorder.

darren from corner brook, nl writes: the fact that the receptionist wouldn't give bonnie her name says it all. (cough cough) i guess the busybody who overstepped her authority was afraid of the repercussions of bonnie putting in a complaint against her. (cough cough) its never a good thing when a receptionist can overrule a doctor's orders. (cough cough) i don't know if all hospital workers require interpersonal and communication skills training, but this receptionist certainly does. (cough cough)

Great Scott from Corner, Brook writes: Ms Dinn I hope your health is improving. I am sure your week of seclusion at home was tortures. I hope Dr. Mercer made it back safely to his home in Corner Brook. I hope by the grace of God I don't get H1N!1. I must admit every time I sneeze or sniffle I start wondering.

I want to call security on Frank Gale of the Western Star. Frankly, Frank I dont get it. By printing this story you should be nominated for the Treadmill Award for Ponderism in Journalism. Never heard of it? You get the golden hamster in a wheel trophy.

Dude this story is about little more than three people and their inability to handle a disagreement.
Um..... at no point did your story tell us Ms. Dinn was escorted from the building. However the caption under the picture attempts to sensationalize this event by stating just that.
I have to go now. I am getting the look from my wife who wants me to take the garbage out. You can bet if I had paid for a paper this morning after reading this story it would be right on top of that bag and I would get the look again for not putting it in the recyclables.

Phil from Oshawa, Ontario writes: The behavior of the receptionist was unacceptable.
There are plenty of other people who can do that job and are willing to treat patients like humans.
Fire her.

Shawn from Nova Scotia writes: I realize that everyone is concerned about H1N1, but come on. A doctor tells a patient one thing in a hospital, and the receptionist tells them another. Then, instead of listening to what the patient has to say, makes a decison to call security...get a life! If you are that paranoid about H1N1, then you need to get out of the hospital and find a job that allows you to work from home! If I were Ms Dinn, I'd demand a written apology from the hospital, the receptionist and the security guards. I really liked the part about the guards acting on the instruction of someone they didn't know the name of...where'd they get their training...College of Cracker Jacks?

dave from Nl writes: The story here says that she asked the security guard for the receptionist name and he said he didn't know. NOT that someone refused to give their name. This is understandable with all the temporary workers hired on in the last few weeks. It is always a good thing when a receptionist can follow a policy put in place by the administration that is designed to protect staff and other patients. If this lady got down off the horse she rode in on and listed for a minute she would have went down for a flu assessment and back waiting with the rest of us in less time it took to argue and shout but that may require some personal skills development too.

me from NL writes: Some points:

1) This woman was never escorted out of the hospital by security.
2) The docter she spoke to is a resident of Stephenville not Corner Brook.
3) The recepectionist and security guard were doing there job as instructed.

This story is not even newsworthy, why would the Western Star even print this and post it on it's website! Here we are in the middle of a Flu pandemic, people are dying and this woman is getting on with this ridiculous crap. Get a life!!!

Now if someone was sitting next to her coughing in the ER waiting she probley would of called the Western Star complaining about how security and the receptionist were not sending/directing ?H1N1 patient to the flu clinio waiting/assessment area.

This H1N1 crap is seriously getting out of hand, you would swear that Ms Dinn had the plague or something....god grow up!

Stephenville res from NL writes: Hats off to Ms Dinn for going public with this!! It's unfortunate that she had to be treated in this manner from an unprofessional receptionist. (Maybe a course in dealing with public 101 would be effective) The question that I have is this an issolated incident or one of the few that has been made public???? What ramifications will the management take? I would hope in the least a public appology as well as corrective action!!

Another kippens gal from Kippens, nl writes: First of all - Bravo Bonnie Dinn! For all you naysayers who feel that this article was a waste of time there are many of us who feel its about time ! So many of us have had our own experiences with the reception desk at STRH but never report it. This poor level of service may be pinpointed to this same receptionist - who knows! Two words 'NOT FRIENDLY'. Its about time that the repetitive unprofessional service at this reception desk get published somewhere - thank you Mr. Gale. It seems the only way things get corrected is by placing it into the media. Letters or phone complaints rarely show result ...... I am so looking forward to my next visit ...

Witness from nl writes: I was sitting in the waiting room with my son when this event happend. As a witness I can say, without doubt that security was NOT call on Ms. Dinn, and she was ABSOUTLY NOT escorted out of the hospital by them. There was no yelling involved only that of Ms. Dinn DEMANDING that she see Dr. Mercer.
I think the situation was handled correctly, that's what the flu clinic is there for. Perhaps Ms. Dinn was embarassed by her own actions and felt the need to take it out on the Staff at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital by blowing this completly out of control.
