Jim Lee
Firefighters want flu tool kit for first responders print this article

CORNER BROOK
CLIFF WELLS
The Western Star

The professional firefighter’s union is calling for a uniform “tool kit” for H1N1 preparedness for firefighters across the country.

Jim Lee, the assistant to the general president for Canadian operations with the International Association of Fire Fighters, says the H1N1 influenza A pandemic is a great lesson waiting to be learned.

Lee was a firefighter in Toronto for 33 years and he says the association has found the response to the H1N1 influenza A to be different across the country, but firefighters are doing pretty much the same job everywhere.

“A lot of people don’t understand what we do as firefighters in that the vast majority of our calls are medical-related,” Lee said. “We think, rather than have this patchwork system of protection we should have a tool kit.”

What he wants is for all first responders to be considered a priority for innoculation, the use of more advanced respirator masks and access to antivirals in the event of exposure to illness.

The current mask used is not oil resistant and stops 95 per cent of particles. The next level respirator is oil resistant and stops 99.97 per cent of particles.

In the western Newfoundland area, he said firefighters thought they were on a priority list to receive H1N1 vaccine and were surprised when they found out they weren’t on the list.
Lee says that could have been a major problem.

“I think we’re lucky this was a mild pandemic,” Lee said. “Scientists are telling us there are going to be other pandemics and they could be moderate or severe, and we should be sitting down with all levels of government and looking at what went right and what went wrong, and we should be better prepared for the next pandemic.”

Next time he wants the tool kit in place and he wants government to recognize the critical place first responders, such as paramedics, firefighters and police occupy.

Deputy Chief Bill Griffin of the Corner Brook Fire Department said he and his co-workers are puzzled by being left off the vaccine priority list.

All the health workers at Western Memorial Regional Hospital were offered vaccine and, according to Griffin, contractors working in the hospital on a regular basis were given the swine flu shot, while security guards were stationed at all entrances keeping the general public out of the facility.

Meanwhile firefighters were in the queue with the general population and when the alarm at the hospital sounded — more than once, he says — firefighters had to go into the hospital and find out what happened.

“At times the hospital was pretty much in shutdown mode,” Griffin said.” Anybody that went in on a regular basis was vaccinated, and that makes sense, so they should be.
“What about us? If the alarms goes off, we have to roll our trucks over there and we have to go in. It’s a scratch-your-head kind of thing.”

Luckily there was no noticeable rise in absenteeism at the department, Griffin said.

“We’ve been quite fortunate, actually. There’s been nothing out of the ordinary, but we didn’t know what to expect.”

If you want to get an early vaccine then go to prison. ha!

Max from Nova Scotia writes: T from nl.....

I think you would have a different point of view if ( God forbid) your house was on fire and the majority of the firefighters were sick with H1N1. It is narrowminded and ignorant comments like yours that make this world the way it is.
They are front line workers, they assist in much more than just fires. They should have been given the shot like any other health care worker.
I agree, your child should of received it as well. However, with the initial limitation of the vaccine they had to prioritize individuals.

Thanks

GREAT SCOTT from CORNER BROOK, NL writes: LISTEN TO THIS MAN!!!!!

Your first responders are servants of the people. Most of them devote their lives to your protection. They do this by selflessly responding to situations and placing their lives in harms way all out of a duty of service they swore to uphold.

They Assist you, protect you, amd you depend on them. They spend countless hours preparing training and planning for the worst and when the worst occurs. It is their selfless actions that restore order and calm. There commitment saves lives.

This is why when they die in the line of duty we call them heroes. Not for how they died but for how they lived.

They do their jobs. Equip them to do it.
I'll gladly wait my turn behind these brave men and women.

I would also let you of the WHAT ABOUT ME GENERATION in front of me too. As I am CONVINCED you do not have the MORAL FORTITUDE to put the needs of others before your own.

CHRISTMAS.....A SEASON OF LOVE AND CHARITY

bob from cb, nl writes: T is right. Max is/was a fireman and is biases. So don't listen to him, he has his own selfish reason to comment...

Fireman should not be jumping the queue over pregnant women or other members of the public.
Fireman have less interaction with the public than a person working the drive in at Mcdonalds or a person working the window at the DMV. But, they are supposed to be phyisically fit individuals and therefore not in a higher risk group than the general population. So, T is abolutely right. The children and the people in the high risk categories should get this first. After all, sure some Fireman might get sick, but when they get sick, it will be like me. I had H1N1 and it was very mild, but my 5 year old got very very sick...
Now you would think that if these BRAVE fireman really wanted to protect the public who are in danger, they would not be trying to jump the queue over pregnate women and people with seriouls health issues.
Don't say there won't be anybody to respond to fires, as that is a crap arguement as well. If a lot of them get sick, they can forget about the training that Great Scott talked about them always doing, and just concentrate on the fire fighting stuff. Seriously, they can cut out a few weeks of training and just worry about fires...

And besides this is not the season where we have a lot of firefires where we end up short staffed and there are not a lot of firefighters on there summer holidays, so I don't think their real motivation is that they are afraid they will not be able to server the public?

Seriously what's next? Are bankers going to say that they need to get the shoot before pegnant woman and young children? Are they going to say that without bankers, the financial system will fall appart and socity will fall into kaos? Really, that is actually worst that a couple of fires when you think about it?

T is right, BooHoo fireman. You guys want to be looked at as brave, but you are frighented, and now whant to trample over women and children as you race for the door! Unbeleivable!!

Simply Amazed from Corner Brook, Newfoundland writes: Bob - how dare you say that Max is selfish! Anyone that has the privilege of knowing Max would understand that he is the most unselfish person you could ever meet. People working in these types of jobs provide the services that most don't even have the courage to do. Yours and T s amount of ignorance is astounding!

I stand firmly on our health care workers and emergency responders receiving the vaccine before the GENERAL PUBLIC. I'm not saying put the children or other higher risk individuals last but these particular people are AT a higher risk of contracting the virus because they serve the public.

Proper management of this situation would have already taken care of providing the vaccine to those emergency responders and health care workers. They would have an 'early' shipment, provided the vaccine and then went on to distribute amount the next category of people. IF this H1N1 virus was such a concern of being a pandemic then there would have been precautions much earlier than now.

I have never seen the society in Newfoundland so nasty and bitter towards others. So much for the good and generous people of Newfoundland. Those days are GONE!

bob from cb, nl writes: Simply Amazed, I know max T myself, and he is a good guy, for sure, but saying that big strong healty men need to get vaccinated before pregnant women who the virus may or may not kill the unborn child is selfish myfriend...

And that is what fireman have been advocating, recall the local fire cheif in Corner Brook in the paper a couple of weeks ago do you?

And lets be clear about this, the fireman want to be treated the same as the nurses in the flu clinics, so they say. But the nurses in the flu clinics got there vacines early only, they did not perference for the antivirals as Jim Lee is saying. Also, the medical emergencys that the fireman are responding to are car accidents and they are not see folks at walk in flu clinics. To say that the risks that the fireman face are greater than the lady working the checkout at Coleman's is a down right lie... Please try to disagree with this true statement if you want to look like a fool...

Not only that amazed, if you have read the artical above, again Jim Lee wants to have fireman given priority to the ativirals (tamilflu) if a fireman gets infected? Only the very sick infected persons currently get this distinction. He wants priority over people who are at risk of dying!!! I would be horified if my daughter was denied tamiflu so that some big burly fireman with the sniffles wanted it so that he didn't miss any work!!

Read the article again and see if you agree with Max and Jim Lee.
As much as I actual Like Max (I went to school with him and was friends with him), I think he is being selfish if he supports this Jim Lee guy as that position can only benefit him!

I had the H1N1 virus the same time my daughter had it. She was very very sick, I felt like somebody kicked me in the chest with a steal toe boot. other than that, I was fine with only a small fever. She was given tamiflu and I turned it down as the Dr. said that if did not mind they would like to save the antivirals for those who were likely to get very sick, not to those who were only going to get mildly sick and recover. As a healthy male, I decided that I did not need to get the mediation, I left it for somebody who needs it more than me. My young daughter who was on Tamiflu, still suffered though 2 days of 104 degrees even with the tamiflu and tylonol.

So, amazed, I am qualified to say when another man is being selfish to want the special treatment that I turned down for somebody else!

I as a man, would gladly go though what I had again so that some young child (who does not have the same amune system as I do) could be given my share of the antivirals, that we all as taxpayors pay for. Yes that is correct. I can prove that we had this because I am proably the only one on here who knows that the tamiflu is free if you have been diagnosed with H1N1.

So don't go spouting off to me, Simply Amazed, about how somebody wanting to jump the que is not being selfish!!

I know exactly what I am talking about and have been proven to not be selfish.

ANY FIREMAN WHO WANTS TO BE GIVEN PRORITY TREATMENT OVER WOMEN AND CHILDREN IS NOT A MAN AT ALL.

What happens when there is a fire and every body has to make it out of a burning building? Do they want to trample ahead of all the women and children in that case as well???

Now amazed, Do you want to talk about being selfish??

FF from CB, NL writes: Bob, what happens when there is a fire?????
We are the ones who run in and try to save them!!!!!
I am a firefighter in CB and I have said from the beginning that I was not goin to get a H1N1 shot. Somewhat for my own concerns over the shot itself, but also because I would rather see it go to someone else who needs it more than myself.
So don't go gettin on here and bad mouthin Firefighters, and comparin us to someone who works at McDonalds or the DMV. Next time your in an emergency situation....like a car crash or your house on fire, I'm sure it won't be them who's gonna be there answerin the call to rescue you or someone you know!

Geoff from Corner Brook, NL writes: FIrst of all, I think that people are forgetting about the situtation the government created for everybody! They told us there was enough vaccine to give everyone twice, what happenend to it? They waited until the second wave of H1N1 was amongst us before they started vaccinating the sick! Really, before we start turning on each other aobut who's a bigger man, maybe we should be putting the pressure on government for screwing the whole thing up in the first place. Lastly, how do you people claim to know the person Max when there is no last name associated with the first, if that is his real name to begin with??? Did anyone stop to think that all you have to do is put a false name in the box when you sign in? Maybe Bob can post his full name and let the people know who he really is.

Max Taylor from North Sydney, Nova Scotia writes: Bob,

I am not sure who you are but if you are saying you know me then you really don't! I just reviewed my post and unless you see something I don't, I did not say give it to the firefigthers before kids and high risk groups.
To clarify, I am Max Taylor former Corner Brook Firefighter( and very proud of it) and now I am an Advanced Care Paramedic in Nova Scotia. I have worked in Emergency services for 20 yrs.I am very aware of the H1N1 virus and the seriousness of it. I have been on a number of calls where patients were expected to have H1N1.
I made a comment about the need for our firefighters and even include the police in receiving the vaccine.
There will be enough doses for everyone! Bob , I am not saying your child is more important than a firefighter. I am just saying that they should be included in initial doses. If you were aware pregnant women less than 20 weeks receive a different vaccine.
So, don't call me selfish! People don't have to listen to me, but I think I have earned a right just as you to speak on this or any other topic.
I would like for everyone else to forgive me, I don't usually like posting replies like this but I felt the need to defend and exlpain my comment.

Thank you!

Simply Amazed from Corner Brook, Newfoundland writes: Bob ... I'm sorry to say but you are not talking to an uneducated female here. I went to school with Max too and perhaps even you. But I will NOT have you talk to me like I'm some unknowing human with little common sense. First of all I don't believe that the reference here is to run down all the children and pregnant women to get vaccinated. No one said anything about that.

Secondly, bravo to you for turning down Tamiflu. And yes ... most people know that the government is providing Tamiflu for those that are ill with severe flu like symptoms. Though perhaps they could have injected you with some common sense.

Thirdly, you keep talking about children and pregnant women ... well what about those with chronic illnesses? I have asthma and refused the shot so that others can have it ... I understand priorities too. To be quite honest ... I would want those that are at a high risk of exposure to be vaccated so that when they are in need they can be there to help us! Firefighters do more than fight fires ... they come when you need medical attention too. Oh ... and they are not all male!

Finally ... never compare someone working in retail to our first responders ... they can't help you in your time of need!!!

I have to say that you are good with insults though your rambling is terrible!

john gallant from Corner Brook, newfoundland writes: Wanting to be placed on a priority list did not mean first. No firefighter wanted to be innoculated ahead of children or any other groups considered to be in a high risk category.Fact is,when the risk for contracting H1N1 was allegedly at its highest and security guards at the door as well as masks, were all the rage, a code red meant that firefighters(with families of their own) were going in with no regard for themselves, whatever the call turned out to be.

FF Corner Brook from NL writes: This is my own opinion, not Corner Brook Fire Department. Also I am not saying for firefighters to butt in line and get the vaccine before children and other high risk people.
Fire Departments around the world are not just responding to fires anymore. Our services are more diversified and we respond to many emergency situations that arise such as high angle rescues, hazardous materials, vehicle accidents and more prevalent medical calls. The Corner Brook Fire Department responds to medical emergencies and to assist paramedics. So the risks are there. Police deal with many incidents as well. Saying this, when its time to go home from work, I have a family waiting for me at the door. I don't want to take any communicable diseases home to my family.

BOB hater from NL writes: Everyone should vote for BOB to be the spokeman for the H1N1 vaccine. Seriously BOB, did firefighters say that they are going to butt in line in front of a pregant woman and her 4 year old son so they can get the vaccine, NO! Get your facts straight! What is it with people and firemen and this H1N1 vaccine, seriously. BoB if you were driving on the highway and get in a car accident or when you had H1n1 virus you suddenly fell to the floor unresponsive, WHO WOULD SHOW UP!!!! Wait now, maybe, wait, just maybe the fire department. But when they phone 911, where the fire department don't have the vaccine there is no one to cut you out of your vechicle to free you. Another example, you are lying in your bed, asleep, and are awoke because your smoke detector has gone off. Your son is still inside (REALLY HOPE DON'T HAPPEN) who goes inside!! What was that BOB, yes thats correct!! THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!!!!!!!! You should watch what you say because it may bite you in the butt some day. For me, i think all first reponders should recieve it along with children, pregant and high risk people. Bob respect the people around you because one day your going to be thankful for them being there when you need them the most.

WHAT THE.... from NL writes: What is with this city, Corner Brook that is. There is no respect for no one here, none for police, fire, doctors, bus drivers bankers no one. Its funny that if there was a huge fire, or a vehicle accident, people like BOB would be following the red flashing lights in his car along with his portable scanner. And BOB Fireman have less interaction with the public than a person working the drive in at Mcdonalds or a person working the window at the DMV. Seriously where have you been, oh thats right livin in your mothers basement surfin the net and playin World of Warcraft. Why down firefighters, you know what time of the year it is, soon to be Christmas. And BOB I'll tell you something, Firefighters here with the corner brook fire department punch alot of time packing and assorting toys with there toy drive so that some parents that are not well off can go down and pick up some toys so their children can smile on christmas morning. And you think that they want the vaccine before children!!!
WHO ACTUALLY CAME OUT AND SAID THIS. REALLY WHO!! NO FIREFIGHTER CAME OUT AND SAID MOVE OUT OF THE WAY LITTLE TIMMY, I'M GETTING THIS BEFORE YOU.
SO STOP THIS BS ANY FIREMAN WHO WANTS TO BE GIVEN PRORITY TREATMENT OVER WOMEN AND CHILDREN IS NOT A MAN AT ALL because really you know nothing.
LOGOUT OF WORLD OF WARCRAFT AND START WATCHING AND READING THE NEWS

WOW!!!! from NL writes: For all guys that want to be a better man, listen to BOB for life leasons. What a man, turned down vaccine so someone else could get it. He is so BRAVE. Walking these streets still unprotected from H1N1. I thought William Wallace from BraveHeart was Brave.
BOB listen at least you had an opinion, because i really don't care if you received it or not. At the beginning of this H1N1,people like firefighters and some other essential service Personell never had one and like FF from Corner brook fire department said, they too have families home. People like you make me sick.
You said you knew Max Taylor because you went to school with him, you were probably the fat kid in the back of class who everyone spit spitballs at.
Good job BOB for turning down the vaccine, you should get a Grade 2 sticker, you know the one when you get a A+ on your spelling test, the big smily face WELL DONE sticker!!!
BOB your a joke, but next time be a BRAVE man and leave your LAST NAME!!
