Kentville, N.S., to install outdoor exercise equipment

Kentville town council has just bought everyone in this Annapolis Valley community a free gym membership.
And there will be no shortage of elbow room in this fitness centre.
“It’s basically . . . indoor gym equipment outside,” Mayor Dave Corkum said in a recent interview.
The gear, about $10,000 worth, will be set up in a couple of outdoor locations that will have the feel of playgrounds. But instead of spring horses and monkey bars, there will be weatherproof ski machines, steppers, treadmills and rowing machines.
“We’re really impressed,” Corkum said. “Town council is very interested in promoting a more active lifestyle.”
Greengym, the equipment distributor, said Kentville is the first municipality in Canada to place an order with the company.
“We’re the first to bring (the equipment) to Canada,” said Guy Chaham of Greengym in Dartmouth, N.S.
The machines were developed in China 10 years ago, he said.
They look like traditional weight-room gear but they use the body weight of individual users instead of stacked weights or hydraulics. One rowing machine, for example, is designed so the user pushes about a third of his or her own weight.
The pieces of equipment are built from brightly painted galvanized steel and are made to last. “They’re meant to survive rain or snow,” Chaham said. “(They’re) almost indestructible.”
