CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Cathy and Paul Parsons are known as a fun-loving couple and their choice in a wedding cake – a KFC bucket complete with a personalized topper of him holding a bucket of chicken and her a glass of wine – has social media clucking.

The Corner Brook couple got married on Aug. 24 and held their reception at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

Paul is known for his lifelong addiction to KFC. It’s no understatement he and Cathy eat a lot of chicken. So much so their wedding guests expected that’s what they would be fed.

The cake grew out of a plan for a personalized topper. Cathy saw an online image of groom holding chicken and the bride holding wine, and the two of them thought it was hilarious.

“Basically, it was the story of the two of us,” said Paul.

With the topper design settled they had to decide on their cake.

Cathy favoured a non-traditional route.

“It’s kind of our personality to have something a little different, something that people weren’t expecting.”

But she was hesitant when Paul suggested going with a McCain Deep ’n Delicious cake, like the ones that accompany some KFC meals.

They considered a plain round white cake with the topper as the focal point. But when they realized the round cake resembled the shape of a KFC bucket, they enlisted their friend LeAnn Crann to make one.

It all fit perfectly with their wedding vision, a bit of tradition and a whole lot of fun.

A cousin of Cathy’s, from the east coast of the province, shared a picture of the cake with a friend through Snapchat. That person posted it on Twitter and interest took off from there.

“We’re actually quite surprised. We’re feeling like we’re slowly becoming famous because of our cake,” said Paul.

“I thought our friends would share it for sure,” added Cathy. But once the tweet was shared by a radio station she knew it was going further.

The original tweet said the cake came from a wedding from “around the bay,” and that comment also generated a lot of reaction as people debated the meaning of “around the bay."

Cathy said they don’t consider Corner Brook “around the bay,” but it was interesting to read the comments and different perceptions.
