When Ryan Tobin found out on a live tweet on Tuesday the band he is a part of has been nominated for an ECMA award, his phone “blew up” with messages.

He is the drummer of Waterfront Fire, a modern rock five-piece band with four members from the Stephenville area.

Tobin said all the members of the band are psyched about attending the ECMAs in Saint John, N.B., April 26-30.

The band had success during the 2015 Music NL Awards, taking home an award for Alternative Album for the Year for their first released album, “First Light.”

During the 2016 Music NL Awards they took home the Rising Star of the Year award, which is the same category they are nominated for in the ECMAs.

Tobin said they won it for Newfoundland and Labrador and now, hopefully, they will win it for Atlantic Canada.

This won’t be the band’s first time attending the ECMAs, as they performed at the RBC breakout session last year in Sydney, N.S., and at the Rock Stage session when it was held the year before in St. John’s.

At this year’s ECMAs they will play two showcases in Rising Star and Rock Stage.

Waterfront Fire is now in their fourth year and the band members continue to get together a couple of times a week. They will go into the studio in the spring with producer Robert Kelly to put together their second album, for which the name is still in the works.

Tobin said it’s pretty exciting stuff, between the nomination and getting the album together.

He said they don’t play music to win awards, but it’s always nice to be recognized among your peers.

“If we keep this up, we’ll have to have a chat with our bosses,” Tobin said with tongue in cheek.

He said all the band members are lucky, as their companies are supportive of their musical endeavours.

Waterfront Fire band members:

- Ryan Tobin from Kippens, drummer, employed with Stantec.
