An accident that caused traffic disruption in Corner Brook early Monday afternoon is going to cause more delays well into the evening.

The accident happened at the intersection of O’Connell Drive and Elswick Road and shut down all traffic flowing along O’Connell Drive between Margaret Bowater Park and West Valley Road.

The initial closure was for more than an hour, as emergency response personnel dealt with those involved and cleared the road.

However, one of the vehicles involved struck and badly damaged a utility pole. This resulted in traffic moving slowly through the area even after the accident scene had been cleaned up.

Traffic flow will be stopped altogether once again for around three to four hours when Newfoundland Power returns with a new pole to replace the cracked one. That job was expected to start at around 5 p.m., according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

One person was taken to hospital as a result of the accident, which is still under investigation.

This intersection is the subject of a petition by neighbourhood residents, who have called on the City of Corner Brook to take measures to address their concerns about traffic volume and speed making the area unsafe.
