There’s some construction work happening on Elizabeth Street near the intersection with O’Connell Drive but it has nothing to do with recent changes to the traffic flow in the area.

The work being undertaken by the City of Corner Brook is to improve accessibility in the area for people with disabilities. The city received $58,821 from the federal Enabling Accessibility Fund Community Accessibility Stream in February and a portion of that money is being used to install accessible pedestrian signals at the intersection, make improvements to the sidewalk leading to the intersection and improvements to the existing traffic island to provide improved refuge for pedestrians.

But many people thought the work was to improve traffic flow in the area.

After the city changed the nearby intersection at Union Street and O’Connell Drive to right turn only traffic looking to turn left onto O’Connell Drive has been diverted to the lights at the Elizabeth Street intersection and has resulted in some congestion in the area.

The city says that issue is on its radar.
