At the end of Monday night’s meeting of Corner Brook City Council, Mayor Jim Parsons addressed the efforts of everyone that helped the city survive last weekend’s wild weather.
The west coast of the island was, of course, hit by a mild spell and torrential rain that obliterated the significant snowfall and caused flooding and damage to many areas.
Crews were able to get things cleaned up in the city in time to host Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, a national event that proceeded to go on without a hitch. Even the outdoor rinks outside the civic centre were somehow up and running again in time for the festivities.
“It’s been a very challenging week, a very exciting week,” Parsons said. “Things were a little rough last weekend, but out of that adversity we came together and we were able to have a fantastic celebration here in the city.”
He said he was proud of the community and the work that those at city hall, the city depot, staff at the civic centre, and local volunteers put into pulling everything back together.
“Absolutely amazing,” Parsons said of the effort.
“Let’s keep that energy going, let’s keep that optimism and that positivity,” he said. “Working together as a community.”
