The City of Corner Brook is getting into a bit of research and development when it comes to recycling glass waste.
Mayor Jim Parsons said the city is trying to find cost-efficient used for the material that are also good for the environment.
During the meeting council approved the execution of a Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) Solid Waste Management Innovation Project Funding Contribution Agreement with the MMSB for a glass recycling pilot project.
The MMSB is providing $12,000 towards the project with the city kicking in $7,500, that includes an in-kind contribution.
The city plans to purchase a hammer mill to shred waste glass and to carry out testing activities to look at the feasibility of using the recycled products in municipal construction projects. The city will be testing the shredded glass as a component in concrete.
Parsons said the city is planning to partner with the private and public sector on the project and this includes working with a commercial partner that will supply the glass.
This won’t include household glass waste like bottles.
