Crews repairing major waterline break on Corner Brook's west side

As waterline breaks go, Donald Burden said the one crews with the City of Corner Brook are working on right now is the worst-case scenario.

It will be this evening before a waterline break on Wellington Street in Corner Brook will be repaired.

A waterline break on upper Valley Road in Corner Brook occurred not long after the one on Wellington Street.

Burden, the city’s director of public works, water and wastewater, said the feeder line that broke on Wellington Street, near the intersections with Valley Road, at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday supplies water to a large portion of the west side.
As crews dug up the area they discovered that a waterline, sewer line and manhole runs above the feeder.
“And that’s what makes it challenging to repair.”
Burden said all of that has to be removed before they can determine the actual damage to the feeder. Once the feeder is repaired the other lines can be put back in service.
But getting that feeder repaired is the priority.
“Once we get the feeder, we can get a lot of the west side back on.”
The city had originally anticipated being able to make the repair in eight to 10 hours, but as he watched crews work in the area at around 10 a.m. this morning, Burden said it would take at least another 10 hours to complete.
Complicating matters a little bit is that not long after the main feeder line break happened on Wellington Street another break occurred in the line on upper Valley Road just above the intersection with Mount Batten Road.
Burden said when the area around Wellington Street was first dug up crews realized that the water wasn’t stopping even with the valves shut off and that’s how the other break was discovered.
He said it’s not unusual to have two breaks occur like that with the old infrastructure that is present in the area.
On Tuesday night the city issued an advisory of a water outage affecting a portion of the west side served by the feeder line.
That advisory was followed this morning by a boil water advisory that encompasses a much larger portion of the city because the line is a main feeder.
With issues with pressure affecting the use of washrooms and the boil order nearby C.C. Loughlin Elementary began informing parents at just after 10 a.m. that it would closing for the day.
