HARBOUR GRACE, N.L. — The Department of Fisheries and Oceans confirmed Monday that a whale stuck in the shallow waters of Harbour Grace has been freed.
However, the whale continued to swim in the area of the harbour closest to Riverhead, indicating the whale may still intend to beach itself.

A minke whale that’s been swimming close to shore in Harbour Grace for the last few days may be preparing for its final rest, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada officials on site.
The whale has reportedly been in the area for at least four days, and as of Monday, June 18, it was swimming near the wreck of the S.S. Kyle. Officials at the scene told The Compass Monday morning the whale appeared to be an adult minke, and there were sores visible on the marine mammal.
They said these whales often choose to rest near shores before dying off. As the tide comes in, it’s expected the whale will move further inshore.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is monitoring the situation and has a boat on site.
