Used syringes have been found in several locations around Marystown of late.
Dennis Kelly, the town’s chief administrative officer, made councillors aware of the matter during council’s meeting on Sept. 18.
The RCMP has contacted the town’s public works department to properly dispose of the syringes, Kelly said.
On Sept. 19, Kelly told The Southern Gazette workers have picked up needles in four separate locations.
Syringes were found in storm sewers on Wilson Street and Smallwood Crescent, he said. They have also turned up behind the old Ville Marie Swimming Pool and at the Mortier Bay Lookout.
“It’s very concerning,” Mayor Sam Synard told The Southern Gazette on Sept. 19.
“It just shows the whole drug issue – in Marystown, on the peninsula, in the province, across the country – is alarming.”
Synard said, in the past, you might have seen a discarded syringe on occasion.
“Now they’re popping up in more places and they’re popping up in larger quantities,” he said.
“What (drugs are) doing to people’s personal lives and their family and their finances, it’s just terrible all around.”
