“Thank God.”

Those were the words Mayor Tom Rose used to describe how he felt about learning that road upgrades for a section of Route 460 in Transportation and Works are going to take place this year.

He’s talking about a section of the Hansen Highway that extends from Gull Pond to M&F Motor Sports in Stephenville, which he said has the hardest conditions and the most negatives impacts on the community.

Rose wants Hansen Highway repairs this year

Rose said that’s because people travelling to and from Corner Brook all use that road and that’s there’s a large amount of trade between the two communities.

He noted there is a culvert slated to be installed in 2019 in the community of Noel’s Pond just east of the bridge, which he considers the most critical one there.

Rose said to him it don’t make sense to be installing that culvert next year and having to tear up the road they’re supposed to be upgrading this year.

He is hoping his council will have the opportunity to sit down with Transportation and Works officials prior to the construction season to see of that culvert installation can be moved up to this year.

Rose said it’s obvious the bridge in Noel’s Pond needs to be replaced as it’s a low profile structure but he don’t expect it’s going to happen soon.

However, he will be pushing to have it cleared out underneath so that water and debris can more flow through more easily and hopefully prevent flooding.

Rose said there’s a large tree stump jammed up under the bridge that needs to be removed before the spring runoff and he is hoping that Transportation and Works will attend to that soon.
