After a full day of deliberations, the jury in the Brandon Phillips murder trial was back in court late Wednesday afternoon.
The jury indicated they wanted to ask the judge a question.
In an unusual move, Justice Valerie Marshall banned the public and the media from the courtroom while the question was being asked.
The jury has wrapped up its deliberations for today and will be back in court at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, when their question will be addressed.
After that, they will go back into deliberations.
Phillips, 29, is accused of first-degree murder, armed robbery, wearing a disguise with the intention to commit a crime, and possessing a weapon dangerous to the public in connection with the incident that left Larry Wellman, 63, dead on Oct. 3, 2015.
Wellman and his wife were having a drink and playing the VLTs in the bar of the Captain’s Quarters hotel in St. John’s when a masked man, armed with a sawed-off shotgun, entered and demanded money from the bartender. Wellman intervened and was fatally shot.
The trial is being held in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John’s.
