Location, location, location!

That’s often the catchphrase for real estate companies when they are selling property.

But Colleen and James Gallant, who both have same-sex marriages in their families, believe they know the perfect location for two rainbow crosswalks.

Northern Peninsula mayors would be open to rainbow crosswalks

The couple, who operate Killick Café at the intersection of Main Street and West Street in Stephenville, have put in a request to the Stephenville town council to approve two rainbow crosswalks at that location.

“It’s the perfect location,” Gallant said. “With mostly all the traffic coming from and going to the Port au Port Peninsula likely crossing one of those two crosswalks.”

The couple’s business is very friendly towards the LGBTQ community, with Pride stickers posted on their doors.

During Pride Week in September last year Killick Café held an open mic event and each year the Pride parade starts out in front of their location.

Gallant said his sister Tina Gallant is married to Beth Newton and that both his mothers-in-law Linda and Cathy are happily married.

He said he would even mind provide the labour and/or paint if the Stephenville town council approved the crosswalks. He said he wouldn’t mind seeing more of them in the town.

Mayor Tom Rose confirmed the town has a request put forward by the Gallants for the rainbow crosswalks and believes there will be a positive discussion on it at Monday’s planning and traffic committee meeting.

He said rainbow crosswalks are trending across Canada and council’s concern in the past dealt with making sure they have the standardization. He said to show it’s a crosswalk, there has to be a white stripe on either side of the coloured stripes.

Rose said a recommendation for or against the crosswalks will be coming from planning and traffic committee and council members will vote on it at their regular general meeting on May 3.

Chantal Drake, a member of Western Pride in Stephenville, said her group would be perfectly fine with the crosswalks edges being white, as long as the colours are there.
