The latest from Marine Atlantic is that their vessels will be departing at 11:45 p.m. tonight as wind is expected to blow ice out of the harbour in Port aux Basques.

That’s according to Marine Atlantic Spokesman Darrell Mercer, who said wind affected them yesterday causing them to cancel crossings from Port aux Basques and North Sydney this morning.

That wind blew the ice into the Port aux Basques harbour and while the thickness of it is not a problem, it creates a problem for the docking process as it builds up along the dock and it isn’t safe for a ferry to dock.

Mercer said while there is a lot of ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, it is not preventing the ferries from sailing. At this time there is not an issue with ice in the harbour at North Sydney.

The ferries have been tied up in port at Port aux Basques and North Sydney since Thursday morning as both Thursday night crossings were also cancelled.
