The Department of Justice has confirmed an inmate was found dead at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s Saturday morning.

A spokesman for the department said there was no indication of foul play and that the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating.

Police say the man was 37 years old.

The RNC communications centre received a call from an official at HMP at 8:22 a.m. that an inmate had been found non-responsive in his cell.

Life saving measures were initiated by corrections staff and paramedics from Eastern Health were immediately contacted and attended the scene. Unfortunately, attempts to revive the individual were not successful and he was pronounced deceased at the scene by a qualified medical practitioner.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates that the man's death is not believed to be suspicious. An autopsy will be conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office in order to determine cause of death.

The man's next of kin have been notified and his name is being withheld out of respect for the family.
