Delores Rumbolt of Port aux Choix is Newfoundland and Labrador's newest millionaire.

The province’s newest millionaire smiled broadly Thursday as she handed out pieces of cake to those who gathered to celebrate with her at the Deer Lake Circle-K.

But Port au Choix’s Dolores Rumbolt wasn’t quite as poised when she stood in the same spot last week to redeem her winning ticket.

She visited the store last Thursday to claim a $50 dollar prize from a scratch ticket. At the same time, Rumbolt had store clerk Edgar Bennett scan her ticket for the Atlantic Lottery Corporation’s  (ALC) May 7 guaranteed $1 million Lotto 6/49 draw.

When Bennett quietly told her she needed to call ALC to discuss what she’d won, Rumbolt said she nearly fainted.

“My knees started buckling underneath me,” she said Thursday minutes after being presented with her cheque.

“I felt sick and weak.”

Concerned, Bennett asked if she needed him to call someone to come pick her up, but her husband Dean was waiting for her outside in their vehicle.

Through a mixture of laughter and tears, she tried to compose herself enough to tell Dean the good news.

“I told him the young fellow told me I won $1 million and he said, ‘Get in the car and shut the door — there’s something wrong with you,’” she said with a chuckle.

The mother of two adult children is a cook with the Canadian Coast Guard, while her husband works in Alberta.

While she said it’s “too early to tell” what she will do with her winnings, she said she has no plans to leave a job she enjoys. Rumbolt describes herself as a casual lottery player and said she has won prizes of as much as $100 in the past, but never dreamed she’d net such a huge prize.

“I buy them every now and then, but now I will continue to buy them,” she said.

Surrounded by family, friends and well wishers and with her cheque in hand, Rumbolt said she’s finally realizing the magnitude of her big win.

“Today I know it’s real because I have the money,” she said with a smile.

The cook with the Canadian Coast Guard was officially presented her winning $1-million 6/49 ticket today in Deer Lake.

Rumbolt won $50 on a scratch ticket and was claiming her prize at the Big Stop in Deer Lake when she checked her 6/49 ticket checked and found out she won the $1-million prize.
