First in series of sustainable food skills workshops today in Corner Brook

The Western Environment Center is partnering with Food Security Network NL and the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band to hold a series sustainable food skills workshops in the city this summer and early fall.

The workshops were put together by the network as part of the Root Cellars Rock initiative and are based on the 4P’s of local food, which are: are planting, picking, preparing and preserving. Together, they include how to grow, harvest, make healthy meals from, and preserve food for future use.

The workshops are a resource for community groups and individuals across the province to foster knowledge, capacity, and engagement on healthy and sustainable traditional food skills in their communities.

Dates for all the workshops in Corner Brook have yet to be announced, but topics will include container gardening, composting, edible wild plants, using culinary herbs, preparing local vegetables, seed saving, canning/bottling and root cellars.

There is a small fee to attend but the workshops are free for seniors and WEC members

“Due to a growing awareness of food safety and security issues and how they are linked to personal and environmental health, people are becoming increasingly interested in learning how to grow, harvest, and preserve their own food using the traditional methods that their grandparents grew up with” WEC project coordinator Corrine Brett said in a prepared release.

The series will start with a container gardening workshop that will be held in the recreation hall of the First United Church on today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The workshop will include a presentation, discussion, and hands-on activities.

Participants are invited to bring used containers and seeds or plants of any kind and size. Containers and seeds will also be provided.
