American motorcyclist dies after highway crash near Doyles

A man from Louisiana man has died after a motorcycle accident on the Trans-Canada Highway near Doyles Friday.

According to the Port aux Basques detachment of the RCMP, the 72-year-old man the two friends he was riding with had just got off the ferry in Port aux Basques.

The man lost control of his bike and left the highway around five kilometres east of Doyles, which is roughly 40 kilometres from Port aux Basques.

A number of other motorists stopped and offered assistance to the rider who was conscious and alert at the scene. However, according to the RCMP, the man died suddenly while in hospital a short time later.

The accident happened at around 5 p.m. Friday. Police said road conditions, alcohol and speed were not factors in the cause of the crash.

The investigation into the cause of the fatal mishap is continuing with the assistance of the Chief Medical Examiner’s office. The identity of the rider is being withheld pending the notification of family.
