The City of Corner Brook will pay its former chief administrative officer $123,584.94 after relieving him of his duties.

At a meeting Wednesday, council voted 6-1 to terminate Mike Dolter’s employment. Coun. Mary Ann Murphy was the only one to vote against the motion.

Dolter was relieved of his duties with pay on May 30.

Council passed a resolution to terminate Dolter’s employment on a without cause basis on June 9.

The termination was to be effective Wednesday. Murphy also voted against that motion. When contacted by The Western Star, Murphy would not do an interview on the subject.

A press release was issued late Wednesday afternoon by the city.

“In accordance with the City of Corner Brook Act, council was bound to comply with a process in terminating Mr. Dolter’s employment, which included a notice of motion, a motion to terminate and a motion confirming the termination,” it stated.

“In total the dismissal took in excess of one month, however, the process, as outlined by legislation was strictly followed.”

Dolter started working for the city in January 2005. His salary upon termination was $139,907.02.

“In relieving Mr. Dolter from his employment he is entitled to a payout for severance, vacation, as well as one month pay in lieu of notice as per the terms of his employment contract and statutory requirements,” said the release.

The termination package was calculated in accordance with Dolter’s employment agreement, city guidelines and policies, and the Labour Standards Act.

The $123,584.94 package includes payment of eight months salary, one for every year of service with the city, in addition to one month in lieu of notice for the period June 9 to July 9.
