Impaired driving charges laid after fatal accident

STEPHENVILLE CROSSING  The driver in Sunday night’s fatal crash in Stephenville Crossing is facing impaired driving related charges today.

A 70-year-old Stephenville Crossing man died shortly after the single-vehicle accident.

The Bay St. George RCMP responded at about 9:30 p.m. It is reported the 62-year-old driver — a Barachois Brook man — failed to make the turn on Brook Street and the Ford F150 pick up left the road. Emeregncy medical services and Stephenville Crossing fire department also responded. RCMP Traffic Services West attended to assist with the investigation.

The driver remains in police custody facing three charges — impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operation of a motor vehicle causing death with blood alcohol exceeding the legal limit, and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death. He is expected to appear in court in Stephenville today.

A third man — a 53-year-old from Stephenville Crossing — was not injured, according to police.
