The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say a fire that destroyed a home in Massey Drive on Monday was probably caused by a barbecue.

Const. Chris Pittman of the Corner Brook detachment said the barbecue was close to the house and was going at the time of the fire.

Pittman said the RCMP received the fire call at about 5:40 p.m. and responded to the scene at the end of Lakeview Drive. The fire was fought by the Massey Drive Volunteer Fire Department and the Corner Brook Fire Department.

Pittman said it took about two hours for the firefighters to extinguish the blaze and that there were some hotspots overnight.

Pittman said the investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing on Tuesday.

“It’s highly probable that the cause of the fire was the barbecue.

But he added “we may never get a definite cause, there’s a lot of damage to the area.”

Pittman said that foul play is not suspected in the fire.
