Alleged impaired driver in fatal accident released

STEPHENVILLE  The man charged with impaired driving in the fatal death of his passenger has been released from police custody.

Wilfred McCarthy, 62, of Barachois Brook made his first appearance in provincial court in Stephenville Tuesday following the single vehicle crash in Stephenville Crossing Sunday night.

A 70-year-old Stephenville Crossing man died when the Ford F150 pickup failed to make a turn on Brook Street. The truck left the road. The driver and a second passenger — a 53-year-old Stephenville Crossing man — were not injured.

McCarthy was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operation of a motor vehicle causing death with blood alcohol exceeding the legal limit, and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 29.
