With the anticipation that it could be a lengthy matter, setting a trial date for Robert Park was set over to later this month during an appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook on Thursday.
Park, 32, was not present for the appearance and his legal aid lawyer Gary Kearney entered not guilty pleas to the 11 offences he was charged with following a standoff with police in McIvers in February.
Just before 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 Park is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with another man that resulted in injuries to the man.
When police went to his home to discuss the allegations, he barricaded himself inside and thus began the standoff that would last for 28-hours
His actions resulted in the evacuation of nearby homes and a heavy police presence descending on the small community on the north shore of the Bay of Islands.
Park was arrested when he left his home and has been at the Waterford Hospital in St. John’s since shortly after.
He was originally sent to the hospital to undergo an assessment of his fitness to stand trial. That assessment determined that he was fit to stand trial and Park sought bail. However, Judge Wayne Gorman concluded in early April that releasing him would result in a serious and significant danger to the public and there was a substantial likelihood he would commit an offence that would involve violence.
He was ordered to return to the Waterford in order to maintain his fitness to stand trial.
Kearney asked Judge Kymil Howe for a couple of weeks on Thursday for the defence and Crown to determine how much time is needed for his trial.
The trial will be set during an appearance on May. 31.
