The Newfoundland and Labrador Black Horse ball hockey team, led by Jeremy Bishop of Corner Brook, will be playing for a national championship at the Canadian men’s A ball hockey championship in Saskatoon today.
Bishop potted four goals and an assist to lead the team to a record of two wins, one loss and a tie during the preliminary round. That included a hat trick in a 3-1 win over Vancouver HC on Thursday.
The provincial squad also features former National Hockey League player for ex-Corner Brook Royal Terry Ryan.
Team NL Black Horse edged the Edmonton Savages 2-1 in its first game of the elimination round Friday before upending the Manitoba Selects 5-2 in the semifinal round later in the day to advance to today’s final.
The Newfoundland and Labrador crew will battle it out in the final with Montreal Red Lite, which has won all six of its games in the preliminary and elimination rounds.
The two teams in the final have yet to meet in this tournament.
The championship will be decided at the Credit Union Centre with the ball dropping at 6:45 p.m. NDT.
