The woman who died after being found in the waters of the Humber River in Deer Lake early Wednesday evening had apparently went to the area seeking reprieve from the summer heat.

The RCMP confirmed Thursday afternoon that the woman was Geraldine Wiseman, a 69-year-old resident of Deer Lake.

By the time police arrived at the boat launch near the Nicholsville bridge just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, bystanders had been trying to resuscitate her. She was taken to hospital via ambulance but was pronounced dead.

There were no eyewitnesses to what happened to her, but police said statements taken from witnesses indicate she seems to have went to the boat launch area to cool off.

It remains a mystery what exactly transpired while she was there, but police said her death is not believed to be suspicious. She was not dressed for swimming and the authorities do not believe her death was a suicide.

An autopsy is to be performed and the police investigation into her death is continuing.
