Dr. Yahya Ismail says he will return to Corner Brook to properly close his practice in April.
The cardiologist, as reported in The Western Star Tuesday, was on leave when he emailed Western Health on Feb. 15 and gave notice that he would be resigning.
Western Health, which said physicians usually give at least a three-month notice when closing their practice, said it wasn’t sure if Ismail would return to Corner Brook to appropriately deal with the patients on his list before wrapping up his work in western Newfoundland.

In an email to The Western Star Tuesday, Ismail indicated he is in Jordan and will come back to Corner Brook on April 11 to begin the process of closing his practice. His plan is to work in Corner brook until May 5.
He was not available for an interview, but Ismail indicated in the message that he had a strong family reason for closing the practice on such short notice.
He offered his apologies in advance for having to close his office.
“I love Newfoundland,” he wrote. “I love the people of Newfoundland and I will continue to … visit Newfoundland.”
With the departure of Ismail after more than 10 years based in Corner Brook, Western Health does not have a full-time cardiologist. Cardiac patients will be managed in the meantime by local internists and a cardiologist who has committed to doing two-week locums until July, when a recruited noninvasive cardiologist is expected to start working for Western Health.
Western Health’s radiology department has also been doing extra work to help the specialists manage the cardiac patient list.
